If I had a hammer

If you could learn a trade — say carpentry, electrical work, roofing, landscaping, plumbing, flooring, drywall — you name it — what skill(s) would you love to have in your back pocket? This is today’s prompt from The Daily Post.

Carpentry. I love to create. I like nice houses and buildings. It would be exciting to know how to build kitchen cabinets for instance. Tall kitchen cabinets made of red wood. Obviously, I do not know anything about carpentry but I love a nice, well-appointed kitchen.  One which have the best wood floors, natural granite counter tops and an abundance of storage.

But sincerely, I would love to learn computer programming generally.  Specifically computer coding language such as HTML (Hyper Text Markup Language), so I could build my own websites with special themes and backgrounds.  It would be exciting to take a blank web page and create my own designs and colors.  Most likely this is the same feeling that an artist has when he step back to view something he just painted. Or the satisfaction a sculpture gets when she looks at her handiwork.  Coding, I believe is a type of art.  In the end masterpieces are created in the form of a web page that millions of people will read.

I remember being able to do this in the early nineties. I was able to build a website on Caribbean arts from scratch. It was fun and exciting to see “gibberish” typed on one screen produce beautiful graphics or text on a live page.  I will go as far to say that I have a little bit of coding envy.  And although I have no desire to do it professionally, I would build websites just for the fun of it.  It could be a great complement to the redevelopment of my interest in photography, I believe.

I have always had a strong interest in computers and once taught myself to pull them apart and reassemble them. For a nonprofit I ran I took apart several donated used computers and put together a good working one.  This part is a lot of hard work. However, if I could really master coding — even just HTML, that would make me happy.
