New Year, Resolutions & Goal Setting – Why Wait?

It’s almost the end of December.  The New Year is just around the corner.  Some people had two lists this month — the Christmas list and the New Year Resolution List.

But are you waiting until after December 31 to starting working on your goals — your resolution list?

Why wait?

New Year: When it comes to resolutions and goal setting when to start is up to you.  Why wait though? Some people wait just to indulge more in the behaviors and habits they are resolving to stop.  All the while putting off the action required to achieve the goals on their list.  There’s no reason you can’t start now.  Today.

Resolutions: Each New Year, millions of people make resolutions for themselves.  Whether ditching bad habits for good ones or promising ourselves to do more, it’s the same every year.  We start the year off with a bang.  Gyms are full. Blenders and juicers are flying off the shelves.  And our gaits and moods are obviously lighter.

But as the month of January moves forward. And old man winter squeeze us in his death cold hands, our resolve gets depleted.  Our souls run dry and we find ourselves curled up into a hopeless ball.  Once again beating ourselves up for not trying hard enough…for failing.  And vowing to do better next year.

But why wait for New Year? Why not start now?

Goal Setting:  Now that our Christmas lists are all but utilized, we can now turn to that “goal setting list”.  While we passively go through Holiday rituals — Eating and drinking too much and leaving exercise to chance — and as we look beyond December 31’s horizon.  With the twinkle of hope in our eyes, we gain strength in knowing that definitely starting January 1, we will do better.

But why wait?

Resolve to start working on your goals now.  Yes. Today.  Resolve to eat less today.  Resolve to take a walk either early morning or after dinner.  Resolve to write in your journal or create a budget now.  Resolve to start today.

There’s no rule that say you can’t.  When you start now, you are bound to have a bit more velocity when you get to January 1.  Otherwise you are just planning to feel bad before you feel better.

So go on. Skip the bad. Start now.

Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year!

How Do You Feel?

feelings of hope and clarity

How do you feel?

Are you tired all the time? Do you feel lethargic?

Are you suffering from depression or are do you just feel depressed? Deflated? Hopeless?

Do you feel dissatisfied with your life but feel helpless to do anything about it?

Do you have dreams but feel powerless to fulfil them?

Do you feel like life is wearing you down?

At the end of your work day, do you feel like you’ve been put through a meat grinder but still feel like you have accomplished nothing?

If you answered yes to one or more of the above questions…I have one more question for you…

…What do you intend to do about it?

Stop With the “Buts” Already!

Changing the story we tell ourselves

During regular discussions with friends and acquaintances, I often hear things like “I wish I could do something else. Instead of showing up to a boring job every day.”  And I might say “well, why don’t you…” Only to hear “well…” followed by a litany of excuses.

Or I might jump in with a quick suggestion based on my observation of who I think they are. Then they might say, “but…” followed by a long list of self-deprecation and excuses, accompanied by a violent shake of the head.

What I see though in all these “wells” and “buts” is fear. People are scared of change. But more realistically, a single mom would be scared of taking the leap to follow her dream given she is the only one her children has to depend on.

However, by using the word “but” (first) they send up an impenetrable wall – too high to climb and too wide to get around. In other words before the balloon is airborne, the air gets sucked out of it….by a “but”.

New Years Resolution…Nahuh!

I don’t do New Years resolutions but…

…I promise to lose some weight…maybe even 40 lbs.

I don’t do New Years resolutions but…

…I resolve to exercise more..maybe even the minimum 30 minutes per day some experts recommend.

I don’t do New Years resolutions but…

…I will read more, write more and blog more.

I don’t do New Years resolutions but…

…I will up my fresh food intake to about 80%…more fruits and veggies, yeah!

I don’t do New Years resolutions but…

…does it really matter what they are called?

New Years resolutions, goals, dreams…I resolve to make a plan and stick to it.

And if I don’t achieve my goals, I will start afresh each Monday.  Yeah, I like that.

But…I don’t do New Years resolutions.

Dreams. Do they mean anything?

2014-02-23 11.34.32I dreamed one night that I saw a very beautiful bird in a cage.  It was a very strange dream in a very strange place.  I had no idea what it meant until my cousin called me to tell me that his niece was arrested for stabbing her mother’s boyfriend. Apparently the bastard was beating her mother.  Was the dream just a dream or was it showing me what had happened to a distance relative? Did I see my cousin’s niece in prison before I knew it actually happened? Who knows. I certainly don’t.

Approximately thirty years ago, I was pregnant with my first child.  Up to this point, the pregnancy had been normal.  I had almost doubled in size by the end of my first trimester but my doctor didn’t seem concerned.  My husband and I were very happy.  We were young, newly married and had moved to Canada right after we were married.  Life was good as we began to put down roots in a brand new country.

I had several dreams over the course of my pregnancy.  Each time I was in a familiar location.  My childhood home in Jamaica.  In each dream, I would take my baby and hand him/her over to my grandfather (whom at the time of my pregnancy was dead) and I would then walk away. Never to return for the baby.  I had the same dream in different locations over the course of several weeks.  Although I thought it weird that I was dreaming in series, I thought nothing of it because at that time I believed dreams to be well, just that. Dreams. (more…)
