Where I Live: Brooklyn is for the Birds

[wpvideo HDRi9Zhr]I was doing my early morning walk this past Thursday and heard a loud tapping noise above my head, way up in these tall oak trees.  Despite my inclination to hurry on my merry way, I stopped to listen. “Woodpecker”, I thought. Who would have thought. In the middle of East Flatbush.  Unfortunately, I did not have the presence of mind to capture the sound on my phone but didn’t make that mistake when I went for my Saturday morning walk trough Prospect Park.  There are a couple of videos in this post where I tried to capture the melodious sounds from some happy natives.

Unexpectedly, multiple species of birds dwell among us in this urban oasis.  I have been awaken many a spring morning by the melodious chirping of maybe a blue jay or a northern cardinal coming from outside my window. And numerous times I have passed a robin redbreast hopping around the nearby school yard.  Even seagulls seem quite comfortable cohabiting with the natives.  Why, even when I don’t see them, these neighborhood birds often leave a messy message on my car parked beneath the lamp-post.  My son even tried to capture a photo of a little green beauty right outside his bedroom window.  Too bad it wasn’t quite visible in the photo.  Also  The photo on my blog header was taken on the lake in Prospect Park.

As a matter of fact, according to Examiner.com, Brooklyn is along the Atlantic Primary Migration Route which makes the city a haven for some multiple species of birds they say.   While there are untold number of species of birds in Prospect Park and other park like settings, in this borough, there are literally hundreds, if not thousands flying freely over head pecking away in the middle of the street or just lounging around on an overhead hydro wire.

I just started to really notice these magnificent creatures and will definitely be watching and listening to them more closely going forward. Of course with a real camera in hand.
